Dr. Bora Gencturk is an Assistant Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Houston (UH). He obtained his B.S. degree from Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey) and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Gencturk’s technical interests are in the broad fields of extreme event resiliency and sustainability of civil infrastructure. In these fields, he is pursuing research in five main areas: novel materials and environmental durability, advanced structural testing and measurement, reliability analysis and probabilistic methods, life-cycle assessment (LCA) and structural optimization, and field investigations and structural assessment. He has received both young investigator awards given by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF): Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) and Broadening Participation Research Initiation Grant in Engineering (BRIGE). Dr. Gencturk was successful in translating this research funding into scholarly publications and educating students. He has produced more than 20 refereed journal papers, 3 book chapters, 5 research reports, and over 25 conference papers.
Dr. Gencturk teaches courses on structural dynamics, earthquake engineering and structural reliability.
Dr. Gencturk served as the Co-Guest Editor of two special issues, one in American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Journal of Structural Engineering, and the other one in Journal of Earthquake Engineering. He has reviewed proposals for NSF and for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. He is a member of ASCE, the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), and the Structural Engineers Association of Texas (SEAoT).
